Because this is widely recognized there is a tendency for the diagnosis of hypothyroidism to be overlooked in Patients who show neither the characteristic symptoms nor the classical signs of Myxoedema. The usual clinical features are constipation, fatigue, cold intolerance and weight gain. Rarely it can present with neurologic problems like reversible cerebellar ataxia, dementia, peripheral neuropathy, psychosis and coma. Hypothyroidism should be suspected in all cases o...

A case of hypothyroidism with ataxia is described. At necropsy there were degenerative changes in the cerebellum, particularly in the anterosuperior portion of the vermis, together with atrophy of ventral portion of the pons, transverse pontine fibres, and middle and superior peduncles. The relationship between ataxia and pathological findings in myxoedema is discussed.
متن کاملCerebellar Ataxia from Multiple Potential Causes: Hypothyroidism, Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, Thalamic Stimulation, and Essential Tremor
BACKGROUND Both hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) can rarely be associated with cerebellar ataxia. Severe essential tremor (ET) as well as bilateral thalamic deep brain stimulation (DBS) may lead to subtle cerebellar signs. CASE REPORT We report a 74-year-old male with hypothyroidism and a 20-year history of ET who developed cerebellar ataxia after bilateral thalamic DBS. Extens...

Dandy-Walker syndrome (DWS) is a rare brain malformation involving the cerebellum, and the fluid filled spaces around it, usually detected during the antenatal period or the early infancy. Clinically, it is characterized by mental retardation, developmental delay as well as cerebellar ataxia. It has been frequently associated with other conditions such as congenital heart diseases, primary hypo...
متن کاملNKX2.1-Related Disorders: a novel mutation with mild clinical presentation
BACKGROUND A highly variable phenotype characterized by thyroid, respiratory and neurological defects has been reported in an already established group of disorders namely NKX2.1-related disorders. We describe here the case of an infant with a novel mutation of the NKX2.1 gene characterized by mild clinical presentation. Aim of the study was to elucidate the genotype-phenotype correlation in ou...
